provide direct funding to
members of the public who
cannot afford to pay for
procedures.

1. Centre of Excellence for Primary Percutaneous
Coronary Intervention (PCI)
Primary PCI is superior to thrombolysis in the management
of ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) - - heart
attacks.
Primary PCI has a higher rate of restoration of food fow
and reduces the risks of re-occlusion and re-infarction –
translating into better outcomes.
2. Centre of Excellence for New Innovation and
Treatment
This centre will focus on various research, innovation
and service delivery such as, among others,
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implanation (TAVI) for
patients deemed high risk for open heart surgery; Trans-
catheter based treatment for resistant hypertension;
Establishment of Limb-Salvage team to avoid limb
amputation; Referral for intracardiac device there
such as Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT)
for servere heart failure patients; Referral center for
Extracorporeal Shockwave Myocardial Revascularization
(ESMR) for patients with severe coronary artery disease
not amenable for bypasss surgery or angioplasty.
3. Centre of Excellence for National Cardiovascular
Research and Capacity Building
This will be the frst cardiovascular research centre in the
country, while IJN is the centre of excellence for clinical
service. Being in a premier academic institution with strong
research fundamentals and support from various levels
i.e basic sciences to ‘state of the art’ clinical application,
we have a very strong foundation for research. At present,
UMMC has more than 20 International linkages with world
key opinion leaders and institutions.
4. Welfare Fund for underprivileged patients,
emergency cases that require life saving procedures
In instances where paying patients cannot afford
payment for procedures, the fund will be used to help
support their needs.
